This magnificent 15th-century monastery has been tastefully restored to offer a multi-dimensional experience: with its beautiful rooms and suites, four gourmet restaurants and three floors of wellness areas in an atmosphere as historic as it is contemporary, Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp is already the talk of the town. A haven of calm and greenery right in the heart of the city, a must-try as soon as it opens!
A monastery for the 21st century
In the heart of Antwerp, an atypical luxury hotel will open its doors in early 2022. Known for its eclectic cultural scene, history buffs admire the city for its famous diamond district, while others distinguish it as the capital of avant-garde fashion. A little more contrast is now added to the picture with a new hotel that has taken over the walls of a former Belgian monastery.
Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp, one of the Leading Hotels of the World, boasts several Michelin stars for its Belgian and French cuisine, making a remarkable entry into the European luxury market. The holistic concept of its spa and its magnificent botanical garden add a delicate dose of well-being to this promising establishment.
Monastic calm
The old monastery has been refurbished, and the rudimentary comforts of the 15th century have been transformed into true contemporary luxury. Modernity has not, however, erased the building’s original style. The atmosphere is sumptuous, filled with calm and serenity. The 108 rooms and suites respect the architecture, yet each has its own unique structure. Some have Jacuzzis, wine cellars and superb fireplaces. All have a view of the botanical gardens or the inner courtyard.
All the virtues of plants
With a botanical garden at the center of the hotel, it’s no surprise to see plants and botanical science at the heart of the spa concept. The monastic heritage is reflected in the different methods used. Naturopathy, herbal medicine and old-fashioned therapeutic techniques are the main focus.
The spa is spread over three floors of the building and boasts a number of attractive wellness areas: a vitamin bar, a large sauna-hammam area, several “cocooning” relaxation areas, not forgetting the sublime panoramic swimming pool.
A large, fully-equipped gym allows you to work out at any time, and there are also several sports sessions and holistic practices, including yoga, meditation and mindfulness.
4 gourmet restaurants
Three-star chef Gert de Mengeleer joins forces with Joachim Boudens behind the stoves of the hotel’s two gourmet restaurants. One is innovative and intimate, creating trendy dishes inspired by Flemish traditions, while the other is a chic brasserie where business meals rub shoulders with candlelit dinners, featuring the very best of Belgian and French cuisine. Whatever their restaurant, they all have one motto: “simplicity doesn’t mean simplicity”.
Other Michelin-starred chefs have combined their passion for seasonal cuisine to create a sensation. Chefs Jacob Jan Boerma and Thomas Diepersloot are committed to surprising guests at their Fine Fleur restaurant by letting their inspiration play with the spices and herbs from the hotel’s kitchen garden.
Finally, the Botanic Restaurant, also run by a former Michelin-starred chef, offers authentic local cuisine in the monastery’s pretty winter garden.
