Kalari Rasayana: a trusted Ayurvedic center

Kalari Rasayana is an Ayurvedic center located in southern India, in the Kerala region. This region, considered the cradle of Ayurveda, embodies the tradition and authenticity of this ancient medicine. We are in the heart of the picturesque village of Paravoor, on the edge of the famous backwaters. This treatment center and Ayurvedic hospital is accredited by NABH (an Indian organization that certifies the quality of hospitals and healthcare facilities). If you aspire to a traditional Ayurvedic retreat, Kalari Rasayana is the ideal place. Here, in addition to traditional treatments, you will be surrounded by a magnificent setting, with coconut trees and lush nature.

To reach Kalari Rasayana, Trivandrum (Thiruvananthapuram) International Airport, located about 60 kilometers away, is the closest access point. From there, a roughly one-hour drive by car takes you to this haven of peace. You’ll see, the journey itself is an introduction to the beauty of the region: roads lined with palm trees, serene canals, and the ever-present tranquility of Kerala. Once there, the center appears like an oasis, surrounded by nature.

Simple and cozy rooms

Set amidst 8 acres of coconut groves, Kalari Rasayana offers 22 cocoons, simple but equipped with all the comforts. The rooms are sober and are distinguished by their wooden furniture, comfortable bedding and direct access to the outdoors, allowing you to fully enjoy the peaceful environment.

Like its sister establishment, Kalari Kovilakom, the living space at Kalari Rasayana is designed to support the healing process. Every detail, from the warm interiors to the cozy ambiance, creates an atmosphere conducive to calm and well-being. The balance between the rigor of the therapies and the softness of the setting is carefully maintained.

Kalari Rasayana could be compared to a luxury ashram. However, do not expect idyllic beaches or a sparkling pool: these elements have no place here. Instead, nature takes center stage, with breathtaking sunsets by the lake and an environment conducive to introspection. Most importantly, the center has 11 treatment rooms, where Ayurvedic therapies are provided in a professional and soothing environment.

Ayurveda at Kalari Rasayana, a traditional approach

The treatments offered at Kalari Rasayana and in the CGH Earth Ayurveda centers follow the authentic tradition of Ayurveda, adhering to the detoxification process called Shodana. This eliminative process aims to deeply purify the body, promoting a complete reset to regain balance and vitality.

To consult: Little guide to Ayurveda

Each patient is invited to understand the entire treatment procedure, which requires strict discipline to ensure optimal results. Stays, with a minimum duration of 14 days, allow for therapies tailored to specific needs, in a holistic setting. It is important to note that only residents aged 18 and over are accepted, in accordance with the center’s principles. This rigorous approach ensures that each individual receives personalized attention and support.

The essential roles of Vaidyas and therapists

The Vaidya, an Ayurvedic doctor, plays a central role in the healing process. At Kalari Rasayana, these experts are deeply rooted in the philosophy and practices of Ayurveda. Their role is not limited to diagnosing and prescribing treatments: they guide each patient with an empathetic, holistic, and disciplined approach. Additionally, the therapists, rigorously trained, do not merely perform treatments, they bring a positive energy to the healing process. Their practice of Kalaripayattu, an ancient martial art from Kerala, allows them to develop flexibility, concentration, and energy. This discipline not only enhances their well-being but also strengthens their ability to provide effective care imbued with restorative energy.

The high doctor-patient ratio at Kalari Rasayana is a major asset that sets this establishment apart from other Ayurvedic centers. Indeed, each patient receives personalized attention and frequent interactions with their doctor: consultations are scheduled before and after the two daily treatments, allowing for up to four meetings per day. Moreover, to ensure consistent and individualized follow-up, the assigned doctor and main therapist remain the same throughout the stay, guaranteeing optimal continuity and quality of care.

The treatments offered: A tailored approach

The therapies prescribed at Kalari Rasayana are tailored to the specific needs of each patient, following a thorough evaluation by the Vaidyas. Here are some examples of treatments:

Complete detox: Panchakarma Chikitsa (21 to 28 days)

Panchakarma, which means “five actions,” is an intensive and traditional treatment to eliminate accumulated toxins in the body and restore the balance of the doshas (vital forces). This protocol is carried out in three phases:

  1. Poorvakarma (preparation) which includes Snehanam, internal oleation (consumption of medicinal ghee) and external oleation (massages with medicinal oil). And Swedanam, therapeutic sweating to mobilize toxins towards the gastrointestinal tract.
  2. Shodhana (purification): Depending on individual needs, the five purification techniques include Vamana, therapeutic vomiting to eliminate Kapha imbalances. Virechana, purgation to cleanse the digestive system. Nasya, nasal cleansing to clear the respiratory channels. Kashayavasthi and Snehavasthi, medicated enemas, respectively with decoctions and medicinal oils.
  3. Paschatkarma (recovery): Rebalancing phase with an adapted diet, restorative treatments like Njavarakizhi (application of medicinal rice), and gentle activities such as yoga and meditation.

Stress management: Manashanti Chikitsa (14 to 21 days)

This therapy is designed to calm the mind and relieve chronic stress. It includes treatments such as shirodhara (continuous stream of medicinal oil on the forehead to soothe the nervous system), Abhyanga massage or even meditation and yoga.

Immunity boosting: Rasayana Chikitsa (14 to 21 days)

This revitalizing program promotes the production of Ojas (the essence of vitality) to enhance the body’s natural resilience. You will find treatments such as Pizhichil, a therapeutic massage with a flow of warm oil. Also, Kizhi, a massage with herbal pouches to stimulate tissues and reduce inflammation.

Among the other therapies offered are Sirovasthi, where warm medicinal oil is applied to the head to soothe the nervous system and reduce stress, Thalapothichil, an application of medicinal paste on the scalp to calm the mind and treat mental disorders, and Swedhanam, a sweating therapy aimed at eliminating toxins from the body. These treatments are complemented by a sattvic vegetarian diet, carefully designed to support the healing process.

Care for specific conditions

Finally, tailored treatments are available for issues such as:

  • Joint pain: Januvasthi (localized oil bath on the knees) or Kativasthi (for the lower back).
  • Digestive problems: Therapeutic enemas and targeted Ayurvedic diet.
  • Hormonal disorders: Specific protocols to restore endocrine balance.

Yoga, meditation, and satsangs

At Kalari Rasayana, well-being is not limited to physical treatments: it is enriched by an integrated approach combining yoga, meditation and satsangs (and Ayurvedic nutrition). Yoga, practiced daily, helps to strengthen the body, improve posture, and calm the mind, while meditation promotes mental clarity and deep relaxation. The satsangs, moments of spiritual sharing and reflection, offer a space to explore teachings, encourage introspection, and cultivate inner peace. These approaches, tailored to individual needs, harmoniously complement the Ayurvedic treatments by creating a balance between body and mind. This synergy between treatments, spiritual practices, and nutrition ensures a holistic and lasting transformation.

A sustainable lifestyle after the stay

The goal of Kalari Rasayana goes beyond treatments: it is about teaching a balanced lifestyle, in harmony with the principles of Ayurveda. Patients leave with specific recommendations to maintain the benefits of the treatments, adopting a sustainable routine that prolongs their health and vitality. Whether you are seeking a complete detox, stress management, or solutions for chronic conditions, Kalari Rasayana offers an inner and outer journey towards lasting well-being, rooted in the traditions of Ayurveda.

Ayurvedic nutrition tailored to your constitution

At the same time, nutrition plays a central role: each meal, designed according to Ayurvedic principles, is prepared with fresh and local ingredients to support detoxification and strengthen the doshas.

Since food is an essential factor in Ayurvedic treatment, the kitchen at Kalari Rasayana is managed by a chef who is fiercely dedicated to preparing healthy dishes from natural and organic ingredients. He and his team ensure that the food is both rich in taste and medicinal value, without any compromise on quality and hygiene. Each meal, crafted under the guidance of the Vaidyas, is custom-made to suit the health condition and constitution of each client. Prepared with care and served in respect of traditional rituals, they discreetly but fully participate in the healing process.
