For 80 years, Rancho La Puerta has been a haven of peace just a few miles from the US-Mexico border. Donald Trump be damned, there’s no wall here. The idea is to reconnect with oneself and with others through a complete and diversified wellness offering. The luxury here is nature.
A plethora of wellness facilities at the foot of a sacred mountain
Just an hour from San Diego, set in a lush valley at the foot of Mount Kuchuma, near the town of Tecate, Rancho La Puerta enjoys a temperate Mediterranean climate that makes it pleasant to visit in all seasons.
Irrigated by a river, its verdant estate covers 1,618 hectares, including 64 km of hiking trails, 12 hectares of landscaped gardens, and an organic farm offering cooking classes.
Those who’ve come to work up a sweat can choose from 11 gyms, basketball courts, volleyball courts and even pickleball courts. And let’s not forget the 5 swimming pools and 3 holistic spas dedicated to relaxation and well-being. Siesta enthusiasts will not be outdone, as some 30 hammocks await them all over the estate.
A unique geological curiosity and traditionally sacred site, Mount Kuchuma is dotted with strange, rounded rocks over 100 million years old. In spring, you can also admire its blue slopes, with mountain lilacs growing between the rocks. The azure passerines, songbirds whose heads are the color of lapis lazuli, add their colorful touch to the magic of the place.
Sleep in a casita
At Rancho La Puerta, you don’t rent a room but a “casita”: 86 small houses scattered throughout the estate, ranging in size from a simple studio for one to a villa for four, complete with private pool and fireplace.
Wood, terracotta and warm, traditionally-inspired furnishings set the tone for a relaxed stay, influenced by Mexican nature, culture and conviviality.
The resort welcomes visitors for day trips as well as longer stays, and can host all kinds of special events including weddings, birthdays and even very healthy hen parties.
Three spas and botanically inspired treatments
The treatment menu at the resort’s three spas is extremely comprehensive, with no shortage of surprising proposals. In addition to traditional massages and anti-aging treatments, the Rancho La Puerta teams offer a range of unique in-house treatments:
-Scalp care to stimulate new growth
Xocolatl Skin Replenishment Treatment: an all-round cocoa-based treatment
Reflexology session with semi-precious stones
-Pedicure preceded by a hot wax massage and rose petal foot bath
-Salt and rosemary loofah massage
… and many others.
A local plant par excellence, mountain sage is at the heart of many of the treatments and by-products available at Rancho La Puerta. Particularly noteworthy are the botanical body oil with mountain sage and the bath salt of the same name, which combine the benefits of sage, juniper, lavender, cypress and cedar.
The resort’s wide range of signature wellness products also includes duos based on essential oils of lemongrass, lavender, eucalyptus and rosemary.
And for those who’d like to recreate the Rancho La Puerta experience at home, it couldn’t be easier: you can opt to purchase one of the products from the cosmetics range.
A new anniversary treatment not to be missed
To celebrate the 80th anniversary of Rancho La Puerta, the spa team has concocted a brand new ritual, deeply in tune with the spirit of the place and local culture: “Embodying Wellbeing Spa Ritual”.
Wrapped in a comfortable cotton bathrobe, customers walk through a garden filled with sage smoke before entering the tent where their personalized treatment will take place. Beneficial quartz, purifying sage and energizing conch are the practitioner’s first tools in a short ceremony that serves as a warm-up. The following treatments follow:
-Solar plexus pulse
-Rebozo treatment: precise stretching using a traditional Mexican shawl.
-Aromatic massage
-Clay body mask: a warming clay mask is applied to the solar plexus.
– A rebalancing of the nervous and energetic system through the laying on of hands.
-Meditation: the treatment continues with a moment of meditation in the garden over a cup of herbal tea.
Farm cooking classes and healthy eating
“La Cocina que canta” is the name of the cooking school located at the center of the estate’s organic farm. Three times a week, you can benefit from the expert advice of guest chefs, many of them world-renowned.
This is one of the highlights of “Saturday at the Ranch”, a one-day offer that includes a massage, lunch, cooking class and access to the complex’s relaxation areas.
Have you always dreamed of making chocolate? A chocolatier will make your dream come true, using beans from Venezuela’s finest cocoas.
Vegetarian meals (with dairy products, eggs and fish), based on fresh, local produce, are served in the Ranch’s dining room. We offer generous, convivial buffets in the morning and at lunchtime, and more intimate room service in the evening. Reyna, the chef, delivers a light, healthy cuisine, amply influenced by the culinary traditions of northern Mexico.
And if you’re in the mood for alcohol, there’s a wine bar too!
