There are hotels you fall in love with at first sight, and Sublime Comporta is one of them. It’s an idyllic retreat in the heart of nature where simplicity reigns, while still enjoying true 5-star service. The very successful spa uses local and organic products. Pascal Languillon, director of Luxe Wellness Club, shares his account of a short family stay in this hotel that has become a true international reference, just a few kilometers from what some consider to be the most beautiful beach in Portugal.
Cabins and villas nestled in the forest
Sublime Comporta welcomes its guests on a 17-hectare pine forest estate. The cabins and villas scattered throughout this forest are nestled between umbrella pines and cork oaks. Most of them enjoy private pools. Needless to say, it’s a hotel where you feel very close to nature.
Located just a few kilometers from the large Comporta beach, famous for its wild aspect and white sand, Sublime Comporta is a place to retreat from the world and spend a few days in complete tranquility amidst the trees. This was exactly what we had come looking for during a weekend at the end of October 2021. Even though we weren’t lucky with the weather (it was raining for the first time in 5 months!), the magic of the place worked its charm.
One of the strengths of this hotel is that it has managed to combine luxury and ecological awareness, a subject we are very sensitive to (for information, I wrote a book called Ecochic). The establishment uses solar energy, has an organic vegetable garden with permaculture vegetables, and the largest biological pool in Europe, filtered with aquatic plants. The hotel lends bicycles to tour the estate or ride to the beach.
The atmosphere is warm, with fireplaces in the lounge and restaurant during this season.
What we also appreciated was the excellent service and the welcome truly worthy of a 5-star establishment. From our arrival, we were greeted with big smiles and small organic infusions made from herbs from the garden. In the room, a bottle of “Sublime Comporta” wine and some sweets, child-sized bathrobes… lots of nice little touches.
Our room: a “guest suite” with a view of nature
We were housed in a “guest suite”, one of the first room categories to have been built, before Sublime Comporta created its villas. It’s a long building with 6 suites next to each other, each with a private terrace overlooking the forest.
The bathroom is upstairs, with soaps and shampoos from the Sublime Comporta brand with natural ingredients and delicious scents. Our bed was very comfortable, but I was even more tempted to dive into the extra soft child’s bed that had been prepared for my daughter!
A spa adapted to family needs
Located in the main building, the spa has a heated pool, a sauna and a hammam, and a few treatment rooms. While it’s not very large, we liked the fact that we could privatize the pool for an hour to enjoy it as a family. A perfect relaxation moment with the little ones.
A babysitting service allowed us to enjoy a couple’s treatment: an excellent deep tissue massage. Once again, I can attest to the quality of the massage and the excellence of the products used. After the treatment, we enjoyed a herbal tea made from leaves picked in the garden, while looking at the pine trees.
The hotel also has a yoga platform overlooking nature. A weekly schedule of complimentary activities is offered, including several yoga classes, stretching, aqua aerobics, Pilates, fitness… The hotel will also develop wellness retreats in the coming months.
Portuguese gastronomy in the spotlight
Sublime Comporta serves cuisine that highlights local gastronomy. We were lucky to stay there on a day when an event had been organized: 4 well-known chefs from different regions of Portugal each offered an appetizer and a main course. This allowed us to taste several absolutely delicious specialties, including a red Atlantic prawn on a beetroot risotto with squid jus… memorable.
The breakfast buffet was very varied, with excellent and healthy products. Fresh goat cheese with pomegranate, fresh fruit salads, homemade smoked salmon, detox juices… the full range of healthy breakfast options, and numerous choices for food lovers as well.
Finally, how can we not mention Sublime Comporta’s restaurant located on the beach? It’s a beach club with rustic chic decor that serves fresh fish facing the waves. Due to bad weather, we didn’t want to try it this time, but we’ll make up for it next time.
Our feeling
With such a name, Sublime Comporta inevitably raises expectations: The hotel does not disappoint, quite the contrary, thanks to its natural setting, its beautiful boho-chic decor and its delicious Portuguese cuisine. We also appreciated the quality of the spa and the meticulous service. A truly relaxed 5-star hotel that we can only recommend!
